Reducing Light Rail Power Spikes

Situation: Rail networks must maintain existing rail services and infrastructure, as well as strategically expand and improve the rail network to accommodate growing travel and demand. Power spikes cause damage to power circuits and force rail cars out of service diminishing the rail network capacity. Operating the DC power delivery system more effectively is essential to safe and efficient operations.

Solution: nD was used to help a large urban transportation organization monitor and diagnose power spikes along its rail networks. Anomaly detection and classification technologies were used to identify the source of power spikes and gain better insight and visibility into the DC power delivery system. nD evaluated billions of data points of high-frequency current and voltage monitoring instruments. It enabled the customer to visualize and monitor millisecond-based data from across the entire rail system efficiently and reliably, while pinpointing the location and source of the dangerous, damage-causing power spikes.
