Planning

nDimensional technology is being used by electricity generation planning teams to understand how to achieve 100% renewable generation in a defined time period. The main challenge with such an undertaking is all of the unknown parameters. There is huge uncertainty with future assets, technology, conditions and more. Options need to be defined and continually analyzed while simultaneously adapting plans. To be effective and become a 100% renewables-based system, it is essential to value a wide variety of generating assets and understand when and where to make capital investments. In order to achieve a 100% renewables-based grid, adaptive planning is required to define the proper requirements, understand and compare the options available, define the most cost-effective path forward and identify the timing and order of capital construction. This analysis must be continually conducted and re-evaluated as technology and conditions change.

Solution: In order to understand, compare and select the most appropriate options, nD technology is being used to simulate multiple scenarios integrating dozens of dimensions to analyze, visualize and compare results from thousands of detailed electricity generation and dispatch simulations which include trillions of data points. The information and insight gained from these simulations are then used in predictors to estimate the value of distributed energy resources like rooftop solar, electric vehicles and demand response programs under different grid transformation scenarios driving a better understanding of how different transitional approaches would yield better cost savings. With the data available from simulations and a prediction of the best path forward, nD optimization models can be used to define and plan the most optimal way to achieve the 100% renewables-based grid.
