Exhalation Valve
The exhalation valve is a pneumatic component that can either be opened or closed. The tubing to the patient is Y’ed at the mouthpiece. On one branch of the Y is the PFCV, on the other is the exhalation valve. One branch is for inhalation, one for exhalation. During inhalation, the small port on top of the exhalation valve is pressurized which forces a membrane down on top of the orifice and shuts off flow. For exhalation, the pressure is removed and air is free to leave the circuit. Since this is a pneumatic component, an electrically controlled on/off valve is used to switch between inhalation and exhalation. |
