Saving Time and Money Using NeuroSolutions!

Mats Rosengren has been working in the remote sensing field for 25-years and has a Degree in Physical Engineering. METRIA Miljoanalys is a consulting group in Sweden that has carried out work for the National Board of Forestry, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and Agency for Fishery along with many more governmental agencies that deal with the environment.

Mr. Rosengren has been using NeuroSolutions and NeuroSolutions for Excel for the past 6 years and has also attended one of our Neural Network Courses in Orlando, Florida. Using remote sensing satellite imagery, multi-spectral sensor data is used for applications to map forest types or changes in a forest or to extract statistical information from the images together with available maps. In the case of mapping of forest types and changes, the information is essential for forestry companies in order to keep their databases up-to-date for planning and forest management. In addition, the imagery has been used to do wall-to-wall mapping of land use and vegetation from space as well as measuring the depth in the sea water, mapping along the coastlines and measuring the vegetation at the bottom of the sea.

NeuroSolutions Tip Box: Diagnosing Inadequate Test Set Performance
Let’s say you create a neural network model to solve your problem, train the network and then run a test set through and the results are inadequate. Here are a few steps you can take to try to diagnose the problem and try to improve those results:

- If the results of the testing set are adequate:
- The network may be too large and prone to over-fitting the training data. Things to try:
- Obtain more data
- Reduce the number of input columns
- Can use either Sensitivity Analysis or Genetic Optimization to try to determine which ones are the most important
- Reduce the number of hidden processing elements (PEs)
- Can use the “Vary a Parameter” method from within NeuroSolutions for Excel or Genetic Optimization
- Try a simpler network architecture (e.g., a 1-hidden layer MLP)
- Use the Leave-N-Out method of NeuroSolutions for Excel (see Volume 6 #4 (December 2005))
- The training data may not be representative of the testing data. Things to try:
- Randomize the files from within the NeuralBuilder or NeuralExpert. Note: This method cannot be used for networks with MemoryAxons, such as the Time-Lagged Recurrent Network (TLRN).
- If randomization is not possible, try partitioning the data sets differently.
- If the results of the training set are also inadequate:
- The network may not be large or powerful enough. Things to try:
- Increase the number of hidden PEs
- Try a more complex network architecture
- Try adding a second hidden layer
- Try a more advanced learning algorithm (e.g. Levenberg-Marquardt)
- The data may not contain relevant information. Things to try:
- Include additional input columns that are relevant
- Remove inputs columns that are not likely to be relevant
- Preprocess your data to make the neural network’s job easier
- For example, the percentage change of a particular input from one time sample to the next might be more relevant to the desired output than the raw value of that input.
