Gauss

Karl Friedrich Gauss (1777-1855) was a mathematical genius who proposed the use of least squares to solve sets of linear equations. He realized that a quadratic equation was obtained in optimization problems involving Gaussian distribution models (after taking the logarithm), which leads to an easy solution for the optimum.
